Strengthening conservation in the territory of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve through ecological restoration actions, fauna monitoring, and strengthening strategic actors<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Between Mangroves and Crabs project<\/strong> was launched in December 2023 with the aim of contributing to the conservation of Restinga and Mangrove<\/strong> environments by promoting the ecological restoration of 316 hectares located in areas contributing to the mangroves and strengthening the monitoring of the U\u00e7\u00e1 crab (Ucides cordatus), especially in the Papagaio-de-cara-roxa Natural Reserve \u2013 a Conservation Unit maintained by SPVS in Guaraque\u00e7aba (PR).<\/strong><\/p>

The project also includes promoting local relationship and articulation actions to strengthen strategic actors and public policies for the territory of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve<\/strong>, as well as training on topics involving mangrove management and ecological restoration.<\/p>

To carry out the activities, SPVS has the financial support of the Floresta Viva initiative<\/strong>, through the Mangroves of Brazil<\/strong> call for proposals, managed by FUNBIO<\/strong>, with resources provided by Petrobras and BNDES.<\/strong><\/p>

Mangroves are interface areas between terrestrial and aquatic environments, with rich biodiversity and a great capacity for storing “blue carbon.” These ecosystems, known as nurseries of life, play a fundamental role in both climate regulation and climate change mitigation, as well as in generating income for local communities.<\/p>

The existence of well-preserved natural mangrove areas is essential for ensuring fish stocks and providing ecosystem services such as protection against extreme events and prevention of coastal erosion. Aiming to contribute to positive actions like these in the territory of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve, SPVS launched the project Between Mangroves and Crabs: Strengthening conservation in the territory of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve through ecological restoration actions, fauna monitoring, and strengthening strategic actors in the territory.<\/p>

The project’s restoration areas are located near one of the most important roosting and breeding areas for the red-tailed parrot, Ilha Rasa. The project’s actions aim to enrich these areas with tree species that provide shelter, nesting sites, and food for the rare parrots of the Paran\u00e1 coast, aiding in their maintenance and promoting their reproduction in the territory. The restoration actions also aim to contribute to the conservation of the mangroves of the Guaraque\u00e7aba Ecological Station by recovering former buffalo pastures located in its contributing basins.<\/p>

The Guaraque\u00e7aba Ecological Station is a Conservation Unit created in 1982, managed by ICMBio, which aims to protect one of the best-preserved mangrove remnants in southern Brazil. The project has a direct interface with this Conservation Unit, which partially overlaps with the Papagaio-de-cara-roxa Natural Reserve. Research actions are also planned in other mangrove areas of the Guaraque\u00e7aba Environmental Protection Area (APA), within the limits of the Guaricica Natural Reserve, located in Antonina-PR.<\/p>

The project intends to establish dialogues with different actors to contribute to strengthening the management mechanisms of the region’s mangroves through articulation, promotion, and facilitation of dialogues between public authorities and traditional communities, and training on the topics addressed by the project.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Between Mangroves and Crabs project<\/strong> will work on the development and implementation of a restoration plan for 316 hectares in the Papagaio-de-cara-roxa Natural Reserve in areas contributing to the mangroves of the Guaraque\u00e7aba Ecological Station.<\/strong> These actions will be monitored for at least two years to ensure the effectiveness of the results.<\/p>

Additionally, the project aims to develop communication and relationship strategies with local residents, public authorities, and partners operating in the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve<\/strong> to propose and implement mechanisms and public policies that enhance the social and economic benefits of well-preserved natural areas. Within this scope, the project also plans to conduct training on ecological restoration and strengthening management for the conservation of Mangroves and Restingas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
