Arauc\u00e1ria Connection<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Arauc\u00e1ria Connection Project<\/strong> is an initiative created in 2017 aimed at supporting small rural producers in southeastern Paran\u00e1. The main goal is to restore Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) in the state, in the Arauc\u00e1ria Forest, within the Atlantic Forest biome, through ecological restoration techniques. <\/p>

By restoring the native vegetation cover, the Project builds a legacy, ensuring the protection of water resources and maintaining soil quality, while also helping to recover species diversity, including rare and endangered ones. This is beneficial for the environment and future generations, as well as for the productivity of local crops. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The restoration techniques used by Arauc\u00e1ria Connection help restore Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA)<\/strong> and Conservation Units. In this way, natural remnants, riparian forests, hilltops, springs, watersheds, and other elements of natural areas become part of a more balanced ecosystem that, over the years, will regain its native vegetation.<\/p>

The regional biodiversity recovery provided by the Project results in greater productivity for the owners’ crops, aids in the biological control of agricultural pests, increases the presence of pollinators, enhances soil fertility, and improves the quantity and quality of water. The guidance, training, and involvement of the owners throughout the process, as protagonists, empower them and strengthen their relationship with the partner company. In addition to helping regularize the properties, additional biodiversity conservation actions add value to the products and services offered by the partners. <\/p>

The benefits of the Project also help ensure compliance with and application of the Forest Code, stimulate the local economy, and assist in climate regulation. To generate regional social and economic benefits, the Project seeks to acquire products and services from the region of operation and train local labor for the restoration chain, creating job opportunities for residents of the covered municipalities. <\/p>

Funding partners have the opportunity to benefit from the Project’s brand and even use the achieved results in sustainability reports and in obtaining certifications such as the LIFE Certification.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Project’s activities are carried out in collaboration with small rural landowners, producer associations, companies, industries, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Arauc\u00e1ria Connection<\/strong> is funded by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and Japan Tobacco International (JTI), which is also the main partner in the development of activities. The Project is also supported by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the Water and Earth Institute (IAT) \u2013 formerly the Environmental Institute of Paran\u00e1 \u2013 IAP, and the Chau\u00e1 Society, a partner in the establishment of a Seed Orchard of native, rare, and endangered tree species. <\/p>

Project Results<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the most important results of the Project is the promotion of the restoration of small rural properties. In 2021, 186 hectares of restoration were carried out on 163 rural properties in the municipalities of Palmeira, S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o do Triunfo, S\u00e3o Mateus do Sul, Paulo Frontin, Paula Freitas, Mallet, Rio Azul, and Rebou\u00e7as in Paran\u00e1. <\/p>

In the Pira\u00ed do Sul National Forest, the Project continued planting native seedlings and controlling invasive exotic species. More than 46 hectares of area were restored in 2021, with a total planting of approximately 50,000 seedlings of native species from the Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, including rare and endangered ones. <\/p>

In Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) of the Salto de Pereira Environmental Park, the enrichment of 10.45 hectares was completed, with the planting of 2,520 seedlings of rare and endangered species from the Arauc\u00e1ria Forest. In addition to enrichment planting, the removal of invasive exotic species present in the Park was initiated by the City Hall. <\/p>

To enable these actions in public areas, constant dialogues with local public managers are articulated. In this regard, one of the results is the signing of a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Municipal Government of Rio Azul for activities in the municipality. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
