Atlantic Forest Great Reserve
The Atlantic Forest Great Reserve is a region of rare beauty that is home to the largest well-preserved continuous remnant of this biome in the world. This territory, located between the states of São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina, still retains almost its entire diversity of environments and species of fauna and flora, as well as its cultural and historical richness. It is precisely this richness that makes the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve a unique opportunity for development based on the concept of Nature Production.
Over the last five years, the territory of the Great Reserve has become SPVS's main area of activity. This region is home to the three Nature Reserves maintained by the institution on the coast of Paraná, where nature conservation education projects are developed, forest restoration actions, fauna conservation projects, land management initiatives and sustainable, profitable, and replicable production, public use activities, as well as other business and biodiversity, promotion and relationship initiatives. The Great Reserve has enabled SPVS to operate as a network, as part of a movement of more than 700 partners who believe in and promote this region as a strategic model for aligning development and conservation of natural areas around the world.

Discover the concept of Nature Production
SPVS learnt about the concept of Nature Production in 2015, after prospecting for nature conservation actions in partnership with the Conservation Land Trust (which operates in conservation projects in Argentina and Chile).
As a result of this approach and an intense strategic planning effort, SPVS began to use the methodology in its projects and in the fulfilment of its mission.
Nature Production is based on the ecological integrity of natural areas, which serve as engines of economic and social resurgence. The concept is put into practice when natural areas (whether publicly, privately or community owned), with their native species, become showpieces that stimulate nature tourism activities. Nature tourism can establish a new economy that benefits local communities and promotes public support for the long-term maintenance of protected areas.
This concept was the basis for the launch of the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve (the first Brazilian case to apply this methodology). It is a cross-institutional, voluntary initiative that brings together various public, private, community, non-governmental and academic partners to promote regional development actions focused on nature tourism in this region that is home to enormous natural, cultural and historical heritage. SPVS is proud to have been a partner in the initiative since its inception and to be part of a network of great partners to this day.
SPVS' actions in the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve
Even before the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve was officially created, SPVS was already working in the area, carrying out initiatives to help preserve the region's true wealth.
Especially after 2018, when the Great Reserve became our main area of focus, local efforts expanded - many of them in partnership with important local public, private, third sector and research organisations.
