Great Atlantic Forest Reserve

The Great Atlantic Forest Reserve is a region of rare beauty that houses the largest well-preserved continuous area of this biome in the world. This territory, located between the states of SĂŁo Paulo, ParanĂĄ, and Santa Catarina, still retains almost all its diversity of environments and species of fauna and flora, as well as its cultural and historical richness. It is precisely this richness that makes the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve a unique opportunity for development based on the concept of Nature Production.

In the last five years, the territory of the Great Reserve has become the main area of activity for SPVS. In this region are the three Natural Reserves maintained by the institution on the coast of ParanĂĄ, where projects for nature conservation education, forest restoration actions, fauna conservation projects, territorial management initiatives, and sustainable, profitable, and replicable production activities, public use activities, as well as other business and biodiversity initiatives, promotion, and networking are developed. The Great Reserve has allowed SPVS to operate in a Network, being part of a movement of more than 700 partners who believe in and promote this region as a strategic model to align development and conservation of natural areas worldwide.

Learn about the concept of Nature Production

From a prospecting work for nature conservation actions, in partnership with the Conservation Land Trust institution (which operates in preservation projects in Argentina and Chile), SPVS became aware of the concept of Nature Production in 2015.

From this approach and an intense effort of strategic planning, SPVS began to use the methodology in its projects and in achieving its mission.

Nature Production is based on the ecological integrity of natural areas, which serve as engines for economic and social resurgence. The concept becomes effective when natural areas (whether publicly, privately, or communally owned), with their native species, act as spectacles that stimulate nature tourism activity. This activity becomes capable of establishing a new economy, which benefits local communities and promotes public support for the long-term maintenance of protected areas.

This concept underpinned the launch of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve (the first Brazilian case to apply the methodology). A supra-institutional, voluntary initiative that brings together various public, private, community, non-governmental, and academic partners to promote regional development actions focused on nature tourism in this region that houses enormous natural, cultural, and historical heritage. SPVS is proud to have been a partner in the initiative since its inception and to be part of a Network of great partners to this day.

Actions that SPVS carries out in the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve

Even before the creation of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve, SPVS was already operating in the territory implementing initiatives that contributed to the conservation of the region’s true wealth.

Especially after 2018, when the Great Reserve became the focus region of our activities, local efforts expanded – many of them in partnership with important local organizations, public, private, third sector, and research.

Access the pages below and learn about some of the projects we carry out in the region, the results achieved, and how the Nature Production methodology has been applied.
